Independent Teacher is a general interest magazine for independent
school teachers and administrators, and we intend it to be a resource
for teachers seeking ideas for curriculum and pedagogy. We are not
a scholarly journal for specialists. However, the writers of the
articles we publish are most often master teachers in their field, with
a body of knowledge and experience in a certain subject area or pedagogy
or issue from which we can all learn. Although the focus of an article
may fall on the program at a particular school, we would look for that
program to be discussed from a critical or professional perspective rather
than the perspective that program might receive in a school publication.
Finally, although a writer's experience will certainly inform what he
or she writes, we do not publish personal or autobiographical reflections,
i.e. "The Life of a Teacher" or "My Experience As/In/With."
A submitted article will normally be sent for review to several members
of the editorial board to determine whether or not we should publish it.
Once we have accepted an article for publication, we will inform the writer,
and then it will be assigned to a member of our editorial board for editing.
The author will be consulted about any changes the editor proposes to
make prior to publication.
At present we do not pay writers for articles.
Back issues of Independent Teacher will continue to be available on our website after an issue has been published.
Submitters are free to submit
accepted articles to other publications. We ask only that they not submit
an accepted article to another publication until after we have published
it in Independent Teacher, and that they indicate to the editors
of other publications that a version of the submitted article appeared
in Independent Teacher, and that back issues of the magazine,
including the article in question, continue to be available for downloading
at our website.
